OAMPS Southern Suns lifts first-ever Australian Hockey League’s title: Women Hockey Recap
Following a cliff-hanging contest, the OAMPS Southern Suns defeated New South Wales (NSW) Arrows by a single goal, 1-0 and clinched the first ever title of the Women’s Australian Hockey League (AHL) that took place in Darwin on June 04, 2011.
In the crucial contest, both teams started the game quite professionally and showed brilliant defence throughout the two halves. However, it was a small mistake of NSW Arrows that sank them under the title defeat.
In the opening ten minutes of the game, the NSW Arrows dominated the field with the ball possession. However, they failed to capitalise the opportunities. In one of the most danger efforts, Emily Hurtz unleashed an outstanding shot on goal, but it went wide
of the goal.
As the game moved forward, the Southern Suns started establishing their dominance onto the field. Georgie Parker, the future star of the Kookaburras, struck a shot, but it was blocked from the opponent's side to keep the score level. However, the regular
attacks put NSW Arrows under pressure.
The period was filled with lot of attacks and counterattacks, but to no avail. The strikers from NSW Arrows seemed dangers with every move but failed to bring their side into the score net. However, it was Southern Suns that drew the first blood in the dying
minutes of the first half.
The Southern Suns were awarded a short-corner after a player from NSW Arrows committed a mistake. It was the turning point of the game that put Southern Suns in the way to success. Georgie Parker brilliantly executed the shot at the goal in the 33rd minute
of the match and notched the only goal of the game.
In the second half of play, the NSW Arrows started more offensive game in search of equaliser. They carried out well coordinated attacks, but failed to make the score level throughout the 35 minutes.
One of the key chances they earned in the second half was when Jade Warrender passed the ball to Megan Rivers, but she failed to deflect the ball and missed the golden opportunity to tie the knot.
Despite several failed attempts, the strikers from NSW Arrows did not lose the hope and consistently attacked the inverse side. However, the defence line from Southern Suns was more impressive than the attacks. In another sure chance, the NSW Arrows missed
a couple of short corners within sixty seconds that was the last effort from them in the crucial game. As the final horn sounded, OAMPS Southern Suns won the game and as well clinched the title of the AHL.
