OC Brad Childress denies Cleveland Browns weigh benching RB Trent Richardson – NFL News
The Cleveland Browns have denied they are considering benching their rookie star running back Trent Richardson but admitted reducing the number of series for him was under consideration.
Browns offensive coordinator Brad Childress while responding to media reports that Trent might be benched for the rest of three games by the Browns, said they were “not there” as far as positioning him on the sideline permanently this season was concerned.
Brad went on to say:
"Are we going to give him a series every now and then, or every third series or something to that nature? Yeah, we talk about that."
Overall, Trent’s performance in the season is not that bad. He averages 3.6 yard per carry averaging about 20 carries per game, but in comparison with his potential and calibre he is not at par. For example, he does not have a 100 or more yards game.
Although the player himself has not reacted to the situation, there is a unanimous view among analysts that the running back has fallen below than expectations.
Apparently, Brad’s idea to reduce the time for him might work because the player will have time to consolidate his strength. There is also a possibility that he performs better in chunks. A particular point here is that he might go on the field in short
spans and go very aggressive, which is expected from him. He is yet to show his true colours as far as speed and pace are concerned.
It is pertinent to mention that the team has not considered writing him off completely but the RB’s inconsistency is the main problem that has been forcing them to give a second thought to their strategy, and it might work well for them and also for the
player himself.
Although the Browns might be too late to come up with this approach when only three games are left in the season, it is likely to work for him in the longer run.
