i had a ct scan done due to stomach pain I've been having for months at first my doc thought it was diverticulitis but its not.

My doc called saying there is fluid in my pelvis and that the right ovary is slightly larger than the left ovary and that, that could be normal but just to be safe i have to get a pelvic ultra sound done.

Then she said i have to see a gyn after i get pelvic ultra sound done.

I am a virgin, she knows this and she knows i nvr been to a gyno or NEVER had a gyn exam in my life!! I'm 21 yrs old.

Soooo wat exactly is a pelvic ultra sound do they just do that on ur stomach or is that where they stick this x-ray thing down below???? 1. chances are you will getting the normal pelvic ultra sound. if you were getting the internal exam they would have told so you can be sure to reschedule in case of your period and whatnot. ultrasounds are nothing to worry about they just squirt a little lube on your pelvis and move around a hand held wand on your belly. it doesn't hurt at all.  you have probably seen it done in movies on pregnant woman. its really no big deal and only lasts a few minutes.

  2. Hey, I just had a pelvic ultrasound yesterday!

A pelvic ultrasound uses sound waves to look at the structures in your pelvic cavity, such as your uterus and ovaries.  Here is exactly what will happen:

    (1) You will probably be asked to drink some water before the exam, then not go to the bathroom.  A full bladder is useful during the exam to use as a "landmark" for other structures.

    (2)  You will be asked to undress from the waist down, then lie on an exam table (you'll be given a blanket to cover up with)

    (3)  The ultrasound technologist (person who performs your exam) will put some gel on your lower abdomen, then run the ultrasound probe over your lower abdomen for several minutes.  This is painless and quite boring

    (4)  After that, they let you pee - my favorite part of the exam!

    (5)  Next comes the transvaginal ultrasound exam. They will have you lay down again, only this time they will drop down the lower part of the bed and have you place your feet in stirrups - basically you are laying down with your knees bent and slightly apart.  It's just how you will be positioned for a pelvic exam, so consider it a practice run.

    (6)  The ultrasound technician will need to insert a probe into your v****a for this part of the exam.  The probe is not very large and is covered with a condom and some lubricating jelly to ease insertion.  The only way this is painful is if you freak out and tense your pelvic muscles, so relax, relax, relax.  Take deep breaths and blow out through your mouth - this will automatically relax your pelvic muscles.

    (7)  You can insert the probe yourself if it makes you feel more comfortable.  The technician will offer you the choice.  Once the probe is inserted, it will need to be moved around slightly to get different views.  Again, I did not find this painful at all, just boring

    (8)  That's it!  The technician will give you a small towel or some tissues to clean the extra gel off your genital area, then leave to let you get dressed.

Honestly, there is nothing to it.   Most likely, there is nothing seriously wrong, but a pelvic ultrasound is helpful to look for ovarian cysts, or fibroids (harmless tumors in your uterus) both of which could be causing your symptoms.

Don't hesitate to tell the ultrasound technician that this is your first experience with a pelvic ultrasound and that you are nervous about it.  They'll talk you through it.

It's quite apparent that you are completely freaked out but really, please calm down.  You are 21 years old which is is the age where you do need a pelvic exam and pap smear, even if you are not sexually active.  Cervical cancer is very treatable and curable IF IT IS CAUGHT EARLY.  Screening pap smears are the best way to detect early cervical cancer (yes, virgins can get cervical cancer too).  Pap smears and pelvic exams are not anybody's idea of a good time, but in the scheme of things, there's a lot worse stuff you could have to go through.  It's only once a year - fifteen minutes out of a whole year!  You can do it!

Please understand, it is not my intention to upset or insult you.  Perhaps it's just that I really don't understand why women are so freaked out by their private parts.  It's just your v****a.  All women have them.  Maybe I'm just lucky that my mom was a nurse, so she was pretty straightforward and blase about these things.  It would have never occurred to me to be all freaked out about something that was no big deal.  Thanks Mom!

Anyway, good luck and don't worry - you'll do fine :-)
