i found a bike in OH that looks like a real good deal

i called the guy and he said that the bike wouldn't be legal in CA because of emission laws, and was saying something about after a certain number of miles, the bike would be considered bad or something

anyways, if thats, true, what would the mileage threshold be?

also, would there be any way to make it CA legal? (like bold on a mini cat or something?)

the bike is a 2005 sv650

  1. You can bring a bike in from out of state and register it if you are moving in to the state, without having to make it

meet CA emissions.  If you already live in CA, you can not register a bike that has less than 7500 miles on it if you buy it from another state.  There is no way that I know to make a bike meet CA emissions standards unless it was built for CA.  CA has done this to discourage us from buying bikes (and cars) from other states as those vehicles are cheaper due to the less stringent emissions standards.   It took me three months to get CA to recognize that my Shadow ACE with 17,000 miles on it (bought in GA by me, a CA resident) was even street legal.  Hope this was helpful.

  2. You might want to ask the DMV, but all the bikes I've ever owned in CA, none of them had smog issues or had to be smogged. It might some law in OH. Between you and Me, I wouldn't go all the way to OH for a bike, even a real good deal. Time and gas alone is a huge turn off, but also something could be wrong with it, too. You should find a local bike for sale and request a mechanic check it out Before buying it. A good seller won't mind and you have to wonder about the seller that does. A bike isn't a good deal if you have to dump a lot of money into fixing it.

  3. Currently, Arizona is the only state with mandatory emissions testing for motorcycles.

  4. a 2005 can be "imported" to california legally

it's the "new" bikes that cannot be imported without passing emissions..
