What could an oil company do to help when oil spills occur?

Ask Exxon..their oil is still sitting feet under the Alaskan coast line from their '80s spill.  There's nothing you can do....it's inevitable that oil will always spill...hence the name 'oil spill'.  To answer your question is simple.  They can spill all they want because they have the money to make it 'disappear'.  You can only hope that a spill is contained on the water.  Once it reaches land then it is impossible to clean it up entirely.  The solution to pollution is dilution.


  2. Before - try not to drive the ship drunk.  And don't let Al Qaeda anywhere near the pipelines.

    After - there are already very high tech systems prepared to capture the spilled oil.  On the ocean, they use floating booms to round up the oil that naturally floats on the surface.  Most of it can be reclaimed.

    Interestingly, oil is a nutrient.  Because we have cleaned up so much of it that used to naturally seep from the ocean floor, the kelp beds are dying off.
