OK, What are the usual deployments of a SWAT team?

SWAT is a section of the police department. In big cities like NY the people on SWAT (called: ESU) are permanently in that unit and they deploy to special jobs. In smaller forces the regular cops double as SWAT operatives and your only called up in an emergency although they you do have to go for training.

SWAT teams get called into service on an ON CALL basis. The officers that comprise SWAT have specialized classification training, much like a sniper Spec.Ops individual would in the Corps. The individual is still a marine with a rifle and keeps training as a sniper, is attached to a sniper unit but is still "Just a marine" when it comes down to it.

If a Crisis situation comes in and SWAT is needed, the Lt, on duty calls thier supervisor and advises what the situation is and how it has progressed. Typically, the SWAT unit will be called if a persuit sit. has become a fugitive barricade / hostage sit. When the call goes out, all officers who are SWAT get paged, wether they are on shift / duty or not. If they are on duty, dispatch will find units to cover the area they were in.

the only time a SWAT officer would be deferred from a call is if they have gone through a truama situation such as having shot a suspect / perp. or suffered some grevious family loss.....something comparable that would have thier mental state not on top where it needs to be.

Depending on where you are, most cases if your part of a SWAT team your on call 24hours 6 days a week,

You have to become a Police Officer, do your desk work, get field training, apply for the SWAT program, and then redo your basic training, then they consider you to start the SWAT training
