for freestyle, I get like 45 seconds which is horrible. How can I get a better time like in the low 30's, or high 20's?

  1. Okay, do a six beat kick (6 kicks per two arm strokes), have an aggressive arm pull, extend your arm all the way, finish your pull at your hips, pretend there's a line that goes down the middle of your body and don't let your hands pass it, don't breathe very much during a sprint, when your at  practice breathe every 3 or 5 strokes, keep your legs straight and point your toes, after you dive in the pool do a really powerful fishtail (hard dolphin kicks) that can help you get a lead on competition and a fast start to your race, don't breathe on your first two strokes after your fishtail, do a powerful flipturn and another good fishtail after your turn and just work on it at every chance you get. Try your very best.

    Good Luck!!!  :)

  2. I'm going to assume you're reffering to swimming 50 yards/ meters for this question.  First off you should work on your start, you want a long shallow dive entry, next work on your arm motion you want a fluid motion for both arms, your index finger should enter the water first with a body roll to that side of the body make sure you bring your arm down your chest and out by your hip, when one hand enter the water the other should be exiting, hand paddles work great, finally work on your kick ideally you want a 6 beat kick per cycle (a cycle being every two arm strokes) use a kickboard and just practice the kick, finally work on your rotary breathing if you can try to breath every third arm stroke, if you have trouble breathing to both sides then go every forth arm stroke.  If you're swimming in a 25 yard/meter pool then you're also going to need to work on you flip turns, just constant practice and a nice tight roll.

  3. dont beat your self up about it. rotate your shoulders. long strong strokes, but dont take too long making it long but dont make it short and choppy either. constantly kicking is important. flip turns and starts are also crucial

  4. make sure you're kicking really hard

also working on your starts and turns can help drop some time

your arms should be reaching out in front of you, don't be choppy

just have fun and swim your heart out!!
