OK, i'm a little confused about something...Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1587) was the Catholic queen of Scotland held captive in England by Elizabeth I for 19 YEARS and then beheaded..

But i also read that Mary, who was staunchly Catholic, locked up Elizabeth I for a while......how is this possible? i don't understand.....WHO locked who up???...

  1. There were two Catholic Queens: Mary I of England (Mary Tudor) was Elizabeth's half sister, who locked up Elizabeth, and when Elizabeth was Queen, she had her cousin Mary, Queen of Scot (Mary Stuart) locked up for plotting against her.

Mary I (18 February 1516 – 17 November 1558), was Queen of England and Queen of Ireland from 19 July 1553 until her death. The fourth crowned monarch of the Tudor dynasty, she is remembered for restoring England to Roman Catholicism after succeeding her short-lived brother, Edward VI, to the English throne. In the process, she had almost three hundred religious dissenters burned on the stake in the Marian Persecutions, resulting in her being called Bloody Mary. Her reestablishment of Roman Catholicism was reversed by her successor and half-sister, Elizabeth I. During Mary's short reign, she had her half-sister Elizabeth imprisoned in the Tower of London because she was accused of plotting with the rebels.

Mary I of Scotland (December 8, 1542 – February 8, 1587)  was Queen of Scots (the monarch of the Kingdom of Scotland) from December 14, 1542, to July 24, 1567. She was also the queen consort of France (Reine de France) from July 10, 1559 to December 5, 1560. After a long imprisonment in England she was tried and executed for treason. Also because of her tragic life, she is one of the best-known Scottish monarchs. As a prisoner in England, Mary found herself the focal point of several Catholic plots to free her. Most of the plots involved murdering the Protestant Queen Elizabeth and placing Mary, the Catholic Queen of Scotland, on the throne of England. Wisely, Mary did not become involved in these plots.

  2. Yeah pretty much what they said above. I was once confused about it as well.....there being tow different Marys.

Elizabeth having both a half sister and a cousin named Mary had to have confused her a few times too I'd have to think ;)

  3. You are confusing Mary Queen of Scots with Mary I of England the daughter of HenryVIII and Anne Bolyn..

  4. the above is correct

  5. Queen Mary (Tudor) of England was the only child of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon, Henry's first wife.

Mary Tudor (Bloody Mary), a Catholic, imprisoned Elizabeth (I) in the Tower for treason after Mary was declared queen, which happened after Edward (Henry's only legitimate son) died. Mary viewed Elizabeth as a threat because she was a child of Henry and a Protestant.

Elizabeth I (second daughter of Henry VIII and only child of Anne Boleyn) took over the reign of England after Mary's death. She imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots. Mary Queen of Scots claimed to be the rightful heir of the throne of England as she was the granddaughter of Henry VIII's oldest sister, Margaret.

  6. Mary Tudor Locked up Elizabeth the 1st...Elizabeth the 1st locked up Mary Queen Of Scots...Elizabeth 1st obviously felt that Mary Q OF Scots was going  for the English throne, so Elizabeth made sure she didn't...Mary Tudor also felt that Elizabeth 1st was a threat to her.

  7. Mary was Queen first, and while she was Queen, she locked up Elizabeth on the advice of her husband, James. Actually, she wasn't imprisoned, it was more like house arrest. When Mary was deposed and Elizabeth became Queen she locked up Mary (again, it was house arrest, not tossed into prison) and Elizabeth didn't want to have Mary executed but was forced into it by her advisors.

  8. They were two different Mary's that's why!

  9. Actually, Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.  Mary Tudor, aka Mary I of England, aka Bloody Mary, was daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon...who was Catholic.  Henry began the Anglican Church so he could divorce Catherine and marry his new crush, Anne, so Anne, and consequently, Elizabeth, her daughter, were Protestant.  Mary saw Elizabeth as a potential traitor to her crown and a threat, and had her locked up.

All the people with the same first names are awfully difficult to keep straight, aren't they?  Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots.  Different queen, as noted above.

  10. Queen Mary locked up Elizabeth while she was still on the throne in England. Elizabeth wasnt queen yet, she didnt become queen until Queen Mary died. Mary Queen of scots was a different Mary. lol
