Probably a long time.  The major problem is the size of the vats.  The world burns billions of barrels of oil a year.  Ethanol makes of just a small percentage (less than 10%) of fuel, but look what corn (which produces less than one half the energy than it does to produce ethanol from corn) as done to the food market.

What I see is it good for the plastic industry, land locked countries and villages.

Well its says 2011, mind you I think this idea is flawed, in that genetic engineering needs full and proper testing. Yes it does have some merits as a renewable idea, but what about the side effects?
