The Thing Is I think he might Be ADHD we aren't sure yet , the boy wont sit still at all , and he gets so distrackted easy. I love him so much and I want the best for him. So heres the Deal he still dosen't know His ABC's AND He still is learning to count to 100. And if you show him the ABC's he dosen't even know half of them. The teacher sends notes home everyday telling me he wont listen or sit still , and he just wants to play. She says he is A good Boy , but just wants to play. What should I do. I need Help. Im so sad about This and this Is A childs future , Please give me your opinion on what You would do if this was you. And if you have done this tell me your exp. please.

The thing is he he so smart when it comes to street smart or way more advanced in everything else. But NOT School. I was the same & his Dad

  1. i held my son back and it was the best thing for him.  as far as ADHD i have another son with it.  and you son probaly is the smarted child in his class but no one knows it.  he cant sit still long enough to show what he can do.  take him to his doctor.  ask about a med called concerta.  it has made all the difference in my son.  it does not make him sleepy or any thing.  it just helps him sit still and concentrate on one thing at a time.  he also sleeps better since he doesnt have all the things that he should have done going through his head.

as a result, my ADHD child is a straight A student.

    good luck with your son.

  2. sit with him and do activities together. color in, solve a puzzle, read a book. It will teach him to sit still and perform a task (good practice for school) give him LOTS of praise when he focuses and sits still.

Your son is 6 years old, an accurate diagnosis for attention deficit and other learning disorders can be made. Perhaps you should take him for an assessment.

At 6 years old, I think he should be attending school, If you do these things to support him, he should do really well, in time.

  3. get him assessed to see if he has it. If need be, if your school offers summer school for the kindergartener's place him in there to try and catch him up. If he doesn't fair well in summer school, hold him back. Now is the time to do it, he will be better off.

Our school offers summer school for kindergartner who need extra help with their reading/cognitive abilities each year. all three of my boys went through it and it did make a difference when they got to first grade. Debating about my daughter though. She knows her stuff just likes tobe lazy and act like she doesn't know it. All the boys are adhd and it made a big difference in school for their learning ability and everything else...

    Best of luck...

ps, talk to the school counselor and have them do some diagonistic tests to rule out any other learning disability before getting him checked out for adhd. He might be dyslexic or have something along those lines. Cant hurt to try them first. If you request itin writing, they have to respond within a certain amount of time so make sure it is in writing and keep a copy for your self.

    Best of luck

  4. Despite all the advice you might get about holding kids back, research has proved that it really doesn't help and may hinder your child's improvement. Definitely get him assessed and have a conference with your child's teacher and the guidance counselor. Working with him at home will make the difference. My daughter was behind grade level reading by the first report card and was on target by the second because we did so much at home.

  5. I have a 7 year old incredibly smart daughter and school has been a nightmare since kindergartern.  Nobody especially boys sit still in kindergartern, grade 1,2,3.  It is not normal for them.  No body needs to repeat kindergarten.   It isn't design for them to learn a huge amount and they don't.  The main idea is for socialization and to start the process of a routine.  Have you talk to some of the other mom's with boys in the class maybe they have the same thing happening.  Counting to 100 isn't in the curriculumn to the end of grade 1.  My opinion is send him to grade one it might be more interesting for him.  Take Care

  6. my little bro is 6 and before he started school he wouldn't sit down or behave he was all ways up and ruining around, and being a little rotter but since he has been in school he is a lot better he will sit down for more than a few sec,s he not as hypo as he uesed to be , when my put him in school she told the teachers what he was like but he hasnt been no truble.he has been in school now for 2 years

  7. At 6 he should be more advanced.  Is he far behind other boys in his class? ADHD is an immediate presumtion.  There are lots of other things that could affect his learning, hearing problems are a huge one, sight problems, colour blindness or dislexia and more.  Have you talked to your Doctor school couseller about this?  If not I would seek professional help ASAP.  If you sort it out now then he has a reasonable chance of a normal school life.  Good Luck.

  8. The school year is more than half way over, so I think it might be a good idea to hold him back.  There is nothing to be ashamed of, and chances are, it won't have an effect on his future.  When you're held back in kindergarten, it's usually because of small problems, it's not like he is stupid.  He just needs a little more time.

  9. I wouldn't hold him back but I would work with him at home or take him to Sylvan or a similar tutoring place to get him up to speed.  I doubt he has ADHD he is just a regular kid and a lot of them don't like to sit still and get distracted easily.  If you take him to Sylvan he will get one on one tutoring from a professional which will greatly benefit him.

  10. I have to ask this question.

Have you spent time with him at home teaching him some basics ABC etc???  Spend more time with him and he has a chance of a normal school life.

Some parents leave everything to the school but the kids who dont have that, are way behind the others.

You have some work to do.

  11. Have you spoken with his teacher about holding him back or what you can do to better his education?

Jmho, but start working with him on the basics, such as his ABC's, numbers, counting, animals, shapes.  Go to the library more often and read to him.  If he's behind on his ABC's, he's going to be behind in reading and writing, so foresee these obstacles ahead.

Don't expect him to learn everything in school.  Learning starts at home.

  12. Get professional help.

  13. Holding a child back is often the easiest solution to the problem and sometimes it is a good one and sometimes it is a bad one.  Your son is behind and chances are getting frustrated over that fact which can cause a lot of the not paying attention.  Before you make any choice go get his hearing checked, eyes, and have the school test him for speech and other learning delays.

Many times a child is just to immature to start school at the same time as all the others so holding them back a year can be a big plus but if your son is a big kid, by this I mean bigger than most of his classmates, then holding him back and putting him in with a group smaller than him might lead to him becoming the class bully.  Most schools now offer some kind of tutoring check into that or get one on your own and see if that doesn't help.  My son is adhd and struggled in kindergarten as well as first grade but we didnt hold him back instead we got the tutor and try to keep him going that way the best student he will never be but he is a c student now.  My son is 8 can tell you anything you want to know about cars, trucks, tractors, horses and cattle but when it comes to fractions and who was president forget it.  As a parent you know your child better than anyone just sit down with his teacher and ask her opinion and go from there.

  14. look i say talk to the school and the teachers to try and work out something that would b the best bet.

    good luck

  15. You can get reasonable learning books at the store. Sit down with him and make it fun so that he would want to learn. My son just turned 5 last December and he enjoys writing in the activity books. Get together and just make learning into a game since he likes to play so much.
