Question:

OK. Purchase a 99 Mustang Cobra or 05 Mustang GT?

The 99 Cobra has had the following work done on it

-Cold air intake

-H-pipe/full magnaflow exhaust

-lowering springs

-4:10 gears

-Repainted in original black paint

-Recently replaced rod bearings, engine runs very smooth but the exhaust fumes are somewhat white smoky.

-Has 70k miles

-Cost only $10,000

And the 05 Mustang GT would mostly likely be stock and the cheapest model I can find being I'm a college student with a part-time job.

-V8 24 vavle/300 hp/ about 25 less horses than Cobra

-Newer car/ less chances for needed repairs and break-downs

-Cost will be around $17-19K

So I guess my question is should I stick with the 99 Cobra for the lower price I get a well maintained performance car.Its older and theres a greater possibility I guess for mechanical problems, but I save around $6. How reliable are these Mustang cobras???

Or a newer mustang gt with less miles, less horsepower, around the same MPG, maybe more reliable but much more expensive.

Any help or shared experience with these cars would more than appreciative!

  1. First I would check insurance rates

take the cobra to a trusted mechanic and have it checked before purchase if seller says no don't take it ,a newer car has it's advantages.  also just my opinion but a college student with only a part time job should set his sights just a little lower till after graduation and finding a good full time job.

  2. I'd go with the 99, Parts are a lot cheaper and you can do just a little bit more to them.  Nothing sounds as good as the 4 valve Cobra motor, even though the 3 valve on the )5 isn't bad, i would still go with the 99.  I have an 02 GT Myself, I choose that over a new mustang.  Just like them better.  But you can get that 99 up to 400 HP easy with just a supercharger or a procharger.  If you don't want to spend too much money, i would go with the Procharger.  But if money isn't a problem get one or two turbochargers which will put you over the charts on HP.  With two, you could easliy get almost 700 HP depending on how much boost you run.  Procharger will be your best bet.......  All in all, get the Cobra :)

  3. get the 99 stang cuz those mustang gts are c**p

  4. Cobra will blow the doors off that gt. i say Cobra holds value also.

  5. the cobra if you want to save money but if you have money (i highly doubt it because no one has work :)) buy the mustang gt

  6. The Cobra has an independent rear, a 4V hand built engine and at this point it will depreciate slower than the 05, and you save about 8K, so the Cobra would be my choice. Also, it's an SVT product, so more desirable and exclusive. Keep in mind it uses premium gas.

  7. Personal preference really.  70,000 miles is relatively low for a '99, but how hard were those run??  If the rod bearings already needed to be replaced, I would say it has been driven pretty hard.  The '05 should have substantially less miles than the '99.  The big item that concerns me with the '99 is the smoky exhaust.  It could be a tell-tail sign of some major internal problems.  I would go for the '05 in this case, because in the long run, I think the '99 will end up costing you more (in repairs).  The '05 should also get better gas mileage than the '99 with the 4:10 gears.

  8. In my experience, you'd be better off with 2005 if you can manage the cost.  It will cost you less over time.  The horse power drop on the GT won't matter unless you plan on getting your license revoked.  The 2005 GT will have plenty of power.  Trust me.  I've driven one.

Now, about those miles.  70k isn't bad for a 9 year old car.  Assuming that the miles haven't turned over!  It wouldn't be easy to put 170k on it, but it can be done.  But if the GT's miles are under 40k, it may be worth the extra money.

  9. check body lines - the gape of hood - fenders - accident most like

  10. i would go with the 05 gt cuz it sounds like  the cobra has a few problems and that the driver drag race the c**p out of it, and the insurance is going to be higher, but if you are willing to repair it and everything i would go with the cobra.
