Here is what has already been checked tested or replaced, EGR valve, idle air control valve, throttle position sensor, MAP sensor, fuel pressure( tested key on engine off and running does not change before or during the time the engine stumbles or dies), vac. leaks(smoke machine tested), ground connection on back of head by 02 sensor connector, temp. sensor, and spark plugs, also removed mouse nest from intake tube. Running out of ideas need some idea of what direction to go next. Thanks for the help on the last question. I tried everthing that was suggested and still not running any better.

  1. try checking the coolant temp sensor. it could be out of range and giving false reading, which inturn would give bad lean/rich setting.

  2. Some other common issues with 2.2L / 2.5L's are the distributor tone wheel loose on distributor shaft, faulty engine wiring harness (near the injector, TPS, IAC), head ground wire broken or bad connection. wrong PCV, or missing restrictor in valve cover. With a rodent infestation, be sure to check the wires everywhere they run in the engine compartment, as those guys love to chew through everything and an exposed wire somewhere could ground out a sensor circuit and cause intermittent issues.

Did up get any diagnostic codes?

  3. That's too funny you removed a mouse nest lol , was the vehicle sitting in a field etc awhile parked or sitting before you got it? It does sound like the temperature sensor is out of whack and that causing your problem but one thing you could do is short the sensor's wire to the ground once engine is started and see if when the fan is steadily on if the problem that you're having goes away , that would tell you that it's related to the temperature of the engine and that the sensor is at fault.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way not sure if you've over hauled all the sensor plug in contacts or connects or the starter, alternator , battery , engine block grounds etc with fine sandpaper or a file or wire brushes but on a vehicle that age it would be a good idea and so would over hauling the fuse box terminal connections or contacts.

Keep up the good work bec by the time that your done that vehicle will have a really well over hauled system and run a lot better.

By the way what is the temperature gage indicating when the vehicle is cold , started , warmed up and when its stalls out?

Keep us up to date please and don't hestitate to ask for more advice or help I'd be glad to help you anyway I can.

  4. I would look at a bad injector next. you may have one that is leaking in to the engine causing a too rich state. or it's not putting the correct amount of fuel in to the intake and is causing a lean condition. there is also the possibility that the metering system for the fuel is out of spec. another thought also comes to mind, what is the compression level on the Cylinders? the mouse nest also makes me think you may have a restriction in the exhaust system. It's not uncommon for mice to make a nest in the mufflers of cars that have sat for a while. so have that checked out as well.
