OK how do you play dungeons and dragons?

You have to a Dungeon Master who writes up the stories and plays the monsters and places the treasure.  As a player you need to roll up a character and go through the module/adventure.  

To play Dungeons and Dragons for a long time you will need to get a Players handbook and set of dice.  The Dungeon Master will need the Dungeon Master's Guide and at least the Monster Manual.  The other books are optional and can add some variety and uniqueness to the game.  It is a fun game that can be played for years without ever getting old.

Go to hobby shop buy a starter kit.

and after you do that go to a government office and update your citizen profile file to half dead... socially dead, physically alive

also avoid sun at all cost. it will ruin your ability to see in the dark basement of your mom's house.

have your friends teachyou. Ive played d & d as well as other rpgs for years, and the best way to learn is to sit down and do it.

Visit the D&D website; the link I have below takes you to a Q&A section about basic questions and more importantly has a link to a D&D interactive demo where you will be able to actually play a really basic session of D&D that lets you understand what's going on. VERY user friendly.

If you are still interested in the game, any hobby store or online stores can supply you with the basic books.  As for material to play, the WOTC site below can also provide several free short adventures for you to enjoy.
