Question:

OK i am haveing major problems?

ok well i just had a Quail hatch and he has been alive for about 4 hours now and his feathers are hard and some of them are soft and he still doesent walk his feet stay curled but he keeps moving himself. Conturix Quail BTW

  1. It takes about 24 hours for any quail, chiken, duckling, ect to totally fluff out and get all the egg goop off their feathers. Thats why some are hard.

    Did you hatch them artifically? If so, his toes may not straigten by themselves, but you need to watch him for awhile and see if he can straighten them. being born is hard work, he is really tired.

    If his toes don't straighten by tomorrow afternoon, cut a piece of cardboard to be the same size as the bottom of his foot. Place the foot down on the cardboard so the toes are flat out the the foot is in the normal position. Then take some tape (not to sticky, you don't want to hurt his skin.) and tape the foot down good to the cardboard so his toes stay straight. This will help straigten them out and is done with many hatchlings with curled toes. The main thing is to fix it now, so that the bones don't harden that way and stay curled under for life.
