  1. Of course you can take sweets in your luggage.  From personal experience, balloons, whistles and kazoos are very popular too. Although if you take whistles you may regret it because that's all you'll hear for days afterwards until the adults confiscate them. :)

Cheap, pocket-sized toy cars and animals go down well too.

Just don't give any gifts away all at once.  Spread the treats out over your entire time in Ghana.  It's also advisable to give them out of sight of other kids or you'll have a riot to deal with.

Also from personal experience, the kids will want to know about where you come from so take some photos or postcards to show them.  Best of all would be a slim (for luggage space) kids educational book about the country you are coming from.  You can use this to explain the similarities between life for kids in Africa and Europe.  They often have a confused picture of where all these volunteers come from and what life is like in Europe and N.America.

But you'll also be able to buy sweets and treats in Ghana too, even Haribo!

If you want any more advice and tips about the particular part of Ghana you're visiting, just drop me an email.
