I recently changed the oil in the lower half and it smelled like some real bad burnt funky stuff. I changed it again just a couple days later after running it for a couple of hours on the lake and it was real black again and smelled really bad! what could this be from?

  1. Take it in and have it flushed.  It sounds like you have quite a lot of sludge built up.

  2. Change the oil per the manual (follow the instructions) one, maybe two more times.  It sounds like the fluid hasn't been changed as often as it should be (once if not twice per season).  If changed improperly, it will leave an air bubble in the case and cause premature gear/component failure.

Also check it for a milky color.  If any swirly white milky looking fluid comes out, you need to have the seals replaced as it's taking on water and you are bound for failure.

Be sure to use the right gear lube as well.  The wrong type won't hold up to the stress.
