Question:

OMG, Sampras lost to McEnroe? So much for the GOAT title for Uncle Sampras. What are your thoughts?

I guess Sampras got so stuck-up that he managed to beat the (out of form) Federer once and thought that he's actually better than Federer. I bet Sampras was thinking to himself when he beat Federer, "See! Even now that I'm retired, I could still beat ya! That means I'm actually better than you! I'm the GOAT!"

And then he gets his a** kicked by Uncle John??? And Sampras was giving it his all, I watched the match. It was a tournament, not an exibition. Sampras got out-aced by McEnroe (!) in the tie-breaker 5-1!

  1. what i can believe it

poor sampras he would be humiliated

  2. Sampras never said that he is better than Federer...the asker did not either...notice that the asker said "thinking."  SO, I think YOU should get your fact straight or at least read his explanation correctly.

  3. When did Sampras ever say he was better than Federer?  Never.  He actually on record said that he believes Federer will break his record of 14 slam titles.  You need to get your facts straight before attacking Sampras's character.

  4. How does this affect the GOAT title? Did Sampras just get stripped of his 14 grandslams?

What I find ironic is that you were watching the match on TV and you just knew that Sampras was giving it his all. But when Federer lost to Sampras, he was going easy. Wow.

  5. Just to show you Sampras is as mortal as anyone else on the tour...Go Mac Go...

  6. now mc enroe thinks he's better than the fed?

  7. Sampras is by no means better than Federer right now. He is probably better than McEnroe.  Just because he lost doesn't make him worse, and it doesn't diminish what he did.  This way of viewing players is created by the recent dominance of Federer. Until recently he almost never lost (except to Nadal on clay, which is a separate argument).  If you compare the career of Sampras to Federer's, Sampras used to lose a lot.  He never piled up the wins like Federer has done the last 3 or 4 years.  That said, no one would question Sampras's dominance during his career.  The way I see it, the GOAT is still Sampras until Federer surpasses him in Grand Slam singles wins.  You could make an argument for Rod Laver, but nothing is harder than comparing players from totally different eras.
