just got the sc230 for the bristol race, it's preprogrammed with the frequencies, although i'm sure i'll have to update. But, i'm trying to get to know this thing. After reading the manual (chinese to me) i can't even figure out how to scan local police, fire, etc, or to enter a specific frequency. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  3. Jay, I was looking over the manual online. On page 47 is where the instructions are. You'll need to study that page very closely.

My suggestion to you is to contact someone close to you who knows some of the local frequencies of your highway patrol, police department, or 911 agency. Get those scanner codes and learn to program them into your scanner.

Once you have success with the basic operation of the scanner then on race day you could get to the track early and have a clue as to how to set it up. The instructions says that the codes or frequencies are preprogramed but I would not bank on that. See if you can  locate the driver frequencies online and print them out and stick them in your pocket just to be on the safe side so you'll have a plan B if plan A fails  (if the preprogramed frequencies are wrong). The instructions do say that you can chose the race by adjusting the top right k**b while in scanning mode.

    1. While scanning, press

    0. Then rotate the scroll

    control to select New

    Race, then press E

    Note:

Scroll Control is the top right k**b.

    2. Enter the name of the

    race, then press E.

    3. Enter the first car

    number (up to 3 digits),

    then press E.

    4. Enter the first driver

    name (up to 12

    characters), then press

    E.

    5. Enter the driver’s

    frequency, then press

    E.

    6. Set the CTCSS/DCS

    code, then press E

    (optional I think)

    7. Press E to enter

    advanced options

    (Steps 8-11) or press

to skip to Step 12. (also optional)

Hopefully that will give you an idea. I would still experiment with some local stations just to get an idea of how to operate it. One useful feature the Bearcat scanners have is the "Lock and Unlock" feature. When you get to your favorite driver and you only want to listen to his radio then you can press the Lock/Unlock button and it will not continue to scan to another station when radio activity pauses for a second.
