  1. I'm sure she is giving birth.

The meow-like noise will be heard a lot, as she will call to her kittens using this call. My father calls it chirping, but I'm not sure what it is really called.

You don't need to help her. Just leave her alone in a room with hardwood flooring for a half hour or so, and she will do it herself. She will clean up any mess she made while giving birth. The only things you need to do is coax her to nurse and cuddle her kittens, though it may come naturally to your cat and provide her with a small area to rest and nurse her kittens in peace.

My cat gave birth under my bed (with no help from me). I cleaned up her mess, but my mom said she'd have done it herself. I put her in a blue tub that was high enough that the kittens couldn't get out, but low enough so that she can get out. I also put old pillow cases and sheets in the box to make it more comfortable. Keep her food and litter box near by or she may get stressed.

My cat was out of the ordinary, I suppose. Khia didn't make a nest of any kind, though it was her first litter and that may have been why. Not all signs of labor are the same with ever cat. We had not sign my cat was going to give birth except her swollen stomach.

    Hope I helped!

  2. What are the signs of labour?

About 24 hours prior to going into labour your cat may become restless, uninterested in food and begin making a "nest". Her v***a may be swollen and have a clear mucous discharge.

Abdominal contractions will then commence, the queen will strain and the first kitten should be born within 1 to 2 hours. The placental membrane often ruptures ("breaking of the waters") prior to the kitten being born but is not always the case and some kittens are born completely covered in their membranes.

  3. She may be in labor - make sure you have a birthing box ready for her (a box high enough for her to get in and out of, but not the kittens - but big enough for her to lay down and stretch out.

Put the box in a quiet room with a soft light. Do not put it in a high traffic area, and limited the sight-seeing of the birthing process, it can stress out the mother.

Line the bottom with old towels and have dry towels ready to help dry the kittens IF the momma doesn't within 2-4 minutes after they are born.  Plus, you need to have dry towels for after the birthing process to put in the box and remove the dirty soiled towels.  Inform the vet what is happening (when it actually happens) in case he needs to see any of the kittens or tend to the mother.

You should not be doing this, in fact, you need to stay away from any fluids/f***s coming from the cat and kittens.  It can cause problems in the pregnancy.

Cats can give birth without the interference of humans - unless there is an issue of the momma not caring for the young.  Give it a few minutes - it is called labor for a reason.   Please get her spayed as soon as you are able to prevent another pregnancy and more kittens in the world.  Good luck!

EDIT: You may need to close the door so momma doesn't decide to have the kittens in a closet on clothes.  Put the litterbox in there (have someone else clean it first) - and some water (not next to the litterbox or in the birthing box).  Don't worry about food - the cat will not want to eat until it is over - by then, you can let her out like normal and return the litterbox to the normal place it belongs in.

  4. If your vet is open call him, describe what is going on, and ask for advice. Good luck.

  5. please spay your cat after she has this litter.  there are enough starys in the world.
