OMG PARAKEET EGGS!?!?!

Ok, so my friend is on vacation and she left her 2 birds (male, female) at my house when she left. I have 2 birds too so its no prob. But then this morning when I went to see them, on the bottom of her cage was a egg. Her birds had alot of eggs before but they were not fertile because the male was not old enough or something. But now I think he is mature enough because his cere is dark blue and gradually gets lighter. Also the female is really old and skinny. The egg is at the bottom of her cage right now and in the corner. What should I do and is it possible that this egg might hatch? Do you know any good sites that will help?

  2. Since they've had eggs before, what did your friend do with the eggs?  Threw them out, I guess.  If they wanted to breed the birds, they should have provided a nest box, which you can buy in the pet store.  Make sure they have good nutrition while laying eggs.  They will take care of them.

Otherwise, it isn't too critical, especially since they are not your birds.

The usual procedure if you don't want babies, is to leave the eggs there for a couple of weeks after they are all laid, if the female sits on them.  If not, remove them 3 or 4 days after they are all laid.  Typically they lay an egg every 2 days until they are done.

Note that a brooding hen may be a bit aggressive in protecting her eggs; she may not be very sociable.

    Here's a pretty good site:
