The book, not the film. I need to write about this for school, and while I've found some resources and information (and some of it is just so obvious, like the fact that it "happened" during the World War II), it's not enough.

Any help will be VERY GLADLY appreciated!!

  1. part of it happened during the the world war ll I saw the movie and read the book I can say that there is no a big different except that she had a secret lover for a while and the end of the story was that she had gone with him to the USA to not be his debit and they stayed together till his death, about the historical background you can take from the movie its not so far from the movie, it just want to tell you how was the geisha live and how the west considered them as s***s and in the book showed the difference between the geisha and the s**t even in the cloths.

hope this will help a little

  2. I loved this book. The movie didn't begin to do it justice. Anyway you can write about the history of the beautiful and valuable kimonos they wore. I found this piece of information below on line. If you use it, paraphrase. Most of the book took place during the Great Depression of the 1920's. The end of the book was WWII. People were so desperate during the Depression to pay off debts they sold their children, which is how the book started.

"During the Showa period 1926-1989, the japanese government curtailed silk production by taxing it to support the military buildup. Kimono designs became less complex and material was conserved. After World War II, as Japan's economy gradually recovered, kimono became even more affordable and were produced in greater quantities."
