ONGC overcome BEG by 3-0 to ride into DCB Aga Khan Cup semi-finals: Hockey Recap
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) defeated Bombay Engineering Group (BEG) in a straight game by three goals, 3-0 in the quarter-finals of the DCB Aga Khan Hockey Tournament that was played at the Bombay Gymkhana Hockey Stadium. Bikash Toppo, the skipper
of the ONGC was the real winner of the game who demonstrated a brilliant game onto the field.
ONGC were looking comfortable in the game, as it was their first match in the event. On the other side, BEG was playing their third game of the tournament. The major difference between the two teams was in the playing styles. ONGC had better ball possession
and passing techniques as compared to the BEG. It is vital to mention here that the ONGC side comprised of international players including Gurvinder Singh Chandi, Pramod Kumar, Diwakar Ram and Harpal Singh. These international players demonstrated impressive
performances and did not allow the opponent side to score a goal.
The two teams showed disciplined and mature game and had impressive passing in the early minutes of the game. However, it was Delhi’s ONGC that lit the first lamp of the day. Toppo made a lengthy run towards the downfield through the centre and tapped the
ball from left flank into the goal. The BEG custodian failed to block the ball and trailed by one goal in the first half of play.
In a counter-offence, the BEG players got into the defensive circle of ONGC, but to no avail. The player standing inside the circle failed to control the ball and missed the golden chance to equalise the score. In the remaining time, the ONGC players mostly
took the ball under their possession and kept opponent off the score-board throughout the two halves. In the dying minutes of the game, Diwakar Ram and his team-mate Harlpal Singh scored one goal each and expanded the lead up to three points. Ram converted
a short-corner through a drag flick while Harpal made it from the field effort. As the final horn sounded, ONGC rode away the field with a commanding 3-0 victory and moved into the semi-finals of the DCB Aga Khan Tournament.
