O’Neill might have another Derby contender in He’s Had Enough
Trainer Doug O’Neill might have another Derby horse in the juvenile, He’s Had Enough, who was impressive in his first Breeders’ Cup start, where he finished second to, Shanghai Bobby, in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Park on 3 November, 2012.
The wild Triple Crown ride the connections of dual classic winner I’ll Have Another had, could be ready for another strong 2013 Triple Crown campaign, and this time the son of Tapit will be the one to look out for on the 2013 Derby trail.
The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile was the first time, He's Had Enough ran on dirt, because prior to his strong performance at Santa Anita, Reddam Racing’s 2-year-old colt tried Polytracks and turf.
Out of Dixieland Band mare Amelia, He’s Had Enough broke his maiden at first asking when he downed the 6 ½ furlong sprint at Del Mar’s Polytrack on 12 August.
Though, his stakes debut wasn’t all that impressive, as he fell away to finish sixth in the Oak Tree Juvenile Turf Stakes at a mile to winner Dry Summer, this time over Del Mar’s turf course on 5 September.
Keeneland was the juvenile’s next destination for the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity over 1 1/16 miles, and if O’Neill was expecting his colt to bounce back, he must have been really disappointed as he finished 11th on the day.
However, he showed charisma, and enough maturity to challenge the undefeated, Shanghai Bobby, whose 5 up in as many starts, and finishing second against a tough lineup of talented juvenile colts.
“He’s the real deal,” trainer Doug O’Neill said Sunday morning. “He’s got the pedigree, he’s got the body, he’s got the stride, he’s got the stamina. He’s been kind of a Playboy mentally; you could just see the light starting to go on in his head. I was very proud how mature he was [Saturday] with the paddock, handling all the people.”
Paul Reddam owns He’s Had Enough and Mario Gutierrez was aboard him in the Breeders’ Futurity and the Juvenile, and the combination of O’Neill, Reddam, and Gutierrez will be maintained with He’s Had Enough come the Triple Crown days.
