OT Riley Reiff selected in first round by Detroit Lions, watches draft from home - NFL News
Detroit Lions this year were given the lowest first round pick in the drafts since 1992 as the franchise picked University of Iowa offensive tackle, Riley Reiff with the 23rd overall pick.
Unlike other picks who were on hand at New York’s Radio City Hall where National Football League (NFL) commissioner, Roger Goodell called out names and newest NFL players got to shake hands and take pictures with the commissioner, Reiff stayed at home with
his family and saw his name called out on television.
The young offensive tackle spoke about his decision to stay with his family instead of joining the other big talents in New York during his first press conference as a Lion.
Speaking at the franchise’s training facility at Allen Park, Reiff said.
"They tried getting me to go pretty hard. But I love South Dakota, I love Parkston. I wanted to spend it with my family."
Lions’ general manager, Martin Mayhew praised the young talent after the draft on Thursday.
"Riley Reiff - big, smart, tough guy, versatile. The guy is a three-year starter in a good program. He's a good, solid offensive lineman."
The youngster too was excited to arrive in Detroit and said that he will try and help the team in any way possible.
"Wherever the team needs help and I can help the team, that's what I'll do. It starts off by coming in here and working hard and that's all I can guarantee."
Detroit Lions last season finally managed to end their long playoff drought after ending the regular season with a 10-6 record and entering the playoff wildcard rounds.
The Lions were brilliant in offence as quarterback, Matthew Stafford and wide receiver, Calvin Johnson combined for devastating effect.
This year the franchise has bigger prizes in mind than just reaching the playoffs and will hope that the addition of Reiff will also improve the offensive line.
Reiff is a great addition to the franchise for many years to come and he will learn much under the wings of veterans such as Jeff Backus.
Mayhew may just have delivered a gem to the Lions and now it remains to be seen how Reiff delivers on his undoubted potential.
