Question:

OTC antibiotics for pug's nose?

My pug has 2 skin colored hard bumps on top of his nose. I've done some research, and it just sounds like a skin infection. I'd like to treat it at home before I rush to the vet & spend buku $ on something I can do at home. What are some names of some OTC antibiotics I can put on his little nose? (Don't freak out about me not going to the vet. I'll put meds on his nose for a week and if it doesn't get better, THEN I will go to vet.) Thanks & have a good weekend.

  1. You could try an antibiotic ointment BUT, if it really is an infection you run the high risk that an over the counter ointment does nothing and if you wait a week, that is a week that the infection has the opportunity to spread. The only other suggestion that I can make from personal experience is if you go out and buy tee tree oil and put some on a cotton ball and dab it on the area that has the bumps. Tee trea oil is a natural antiseptic and I have used it to treat several of my fosters and my own dogs for things such as ringworm and small cuts with great success.

  2. well when my Pug had a bite on his eye (yes, his EYE)  my vet had me use regular triple anti biotic ointment in his little eye. It healed up nicely. I would think the same would work on your pups nose. And since my vet at Animed recommended it, I would say it's fine.

  3. If you're in the USA, then there is no such thing as an "OTC Antibiotic".  Antibiotics are only dispensed with a prescription from a Vet.

OTC Medications should NEVER be used on an animal unless directed by your vet, especially since you don't know for sure what this is.

Bottom line - See the Vet who will properly diagnose the problem and treat it accordingly.

  4. For general health of your dog and specifically the skin, try Pet Health OPC available at this link:

  5. Triple antibiotic ointment like Neosporyn can be used, but I sure wouldn't wait a whole week if it still isn't healing.

Wait 3 days after you put this ointment on him - if it still looks prominent, you need to get him to the vet.   I can't imagine any "hard bumps" that will respond to antibiotic ointment - that's more helpful for minor cuts or abrasions so they don't get infected.

Bumps are another matter entirely - you really need to find out from a vet what that is - does not sound like an infection to me.
