OUA Fencing Championship – Gold captured by the Queen’s Gaels – Fencing Update
The 2011 Ontario University Athletic (OUA) Championships saw the Queen’s Gael Men’s fencing team take the gold on February 20 at Brock University in St. Catharines Ontario.
A total of nine universities had participated in this championship namely Queen’s, Carleton, Trent, RMC, Ryerson, Brock, Western, Toronto and McMaster. All of these participated in both individual and team events in all the three fencing disciplines namely
epee, foil and sabre.
This fine team was lead by the well-talented Karl Gardner, who was awarded as the Men’s Epee Champion and received the Derjarlais Trophy and Francois Beaucage-Gaureau, who won the award for Men’s Sabre Championship and took the honours to grab the Schwende-Tully
Trophy. It means that overall Queen’s managed to win gold in two fencing disciplines epee and sabre team events.
The championship winning trophy named as the Charles Walter Men’s Championship Team trophy was won for the fourth time by Gaels since 2003-04.
Another major award of the event was the Christian Vidosa Trophy that is honoured to OUA Coach of the Year. Ryerson University’s coach Alice Lu won this trophy.
The honorary award, George Tully Trophy went to Francoise for his tremendous performance during the competition.
The third team championship in the Men’s foil discipline named as the Charles Walter Trophy was won by the University of Toronto.
The individual medal tally can be described by mentioning the three disciplines separately. In Men’s foil the gold medal was attained by (University) Toronto’s Joshua McGuire followed by silver and bronze presented to Scott McNeil from Carleton and Kyle
Chan from Toronto respectively.
In Men’s epee the gold medal was won by Karl Gardner of Queens, silver by Carleton’s Michael Dobbelsteyn and bronze by Gibney Mario from Queen’s.
The Men’s sabre individuals were over-powered by the Queen’s Francois Beaucage-Gauvreau on winning gold, whereas silver was grabbed by Carleton’s fencer named Ben Riley and bronze won by Fausto Rodriguez of Ryerson.
In the team event medals, in Men’s foil gold was won by Toronto, silver by Carleton and bronze by RMC.
In Men’s epee, gold was earned by Queen’s, followed by Ryerson and Carleton winning silver and bronze respectively.
In the results from Men’s sabre few different teams showed their prominence where gold was won by Queen’s whereas McMaster got silver and Western secured bronze in the team events.

The University of Carleton was found quite consistent head-to-head against the Queen’s in many final rounds of the event, ending up at second position. The Championship was exciting as a brilliant display of fencing took place.
