When a batsman is caught out off his bat, how long does the catcher need to hold the ball? They seem to barely hold the ball for a fraction of a second before they throw it up in the air to celebrate. Surely they must have to hold it for a certain time to count?

  1. Law 32.3 states: "The act of making the catch shall start from the time when a fielder first handles the ball and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control both over the ball and over his own movement."

There is no time limit to this. A fielder may immediately have control of both the ball and his own movement (hence being able to throw the ball away in celebration). Or he may juggle the ball for a while before gaining full control of it. Or he may have control of the ball, but need to control his own movements (for instance, prevent himself from toppling over the boundary rope).

A classic example of a fielder not having control of the ball, and celebrating too early, is Herschelle Gibbs's famous drop of Steve Waugh in the 1999 World Cup:

  2. As long as the ball lands in the hands and the fingers are wrapped around the ball- it is out...

What do you want to bring in the 10 count or something?..lol

  3. You dont have to hold it for a set time...you just have to have shown that it was controlled...

  4. The official length of time the catch is needed to be held for is 3 seconds but most umpire give the batsmen out if the fielder seems to have control over the catch

  5. Throwing it up does not mean it touched the ground, so it would have to be given out.

  6. They just need to demonstrate that they have control over the ball. Throwing it up proves that they do have control over it.

  7. I always feel they do it to avoid dropping it

  8. yer i rekon, you just have to have control of the ball without A.K.A dropping it.
