  1. 1> O3 is both a beneficial and harmful gas to living things as they understand today.  (these thoughts may change as they learn more)  While it helps with free radicals in the body it also appears to cause some pasty build up of plaque.  More needs to be learned  about it.  The body does produce some but excess from perhaps the air around us can cause head aches and asthma.

It is produced in nature mainly by lightning.  In human society by many pollutants.

2>O3 is unstable.  Oxygen is a diatomic atom.  That means on its own it will pare up with another Oxygen atom.  This is why it is most often written O2.

Now comes along a CFC (chlorofluorocarbons) which we have produced in these modern times for various purposes most commonly familiar are air conditioning and refrigeration.

The Chloro part is what we are interested in. It represents a Chlorine atom.  The  O3 atom is in its unstable 3 some.  One of the O atoms says hi to the chlorine and they hook up right off the bat.  Since the O atom really does prefer other O atoms to Cl atoms as soon as it can It will hook up with another O atom to make a nice cozy O2 couple as follows.

        Cl· + O3 → ClO· + O2

        ClO· + O3 → Cl· + 2 O2

Notice that the Cl atom is once again left alone.  This starts the chain all over again.  One Chlorine atom can do some wide spread damage till it pairs up with something more stable like this

        ClO + ClO → Cl2 +  O2

    Then the cycle has stopped
