Oakland Athletics’ Yoenis Cespedes explains why he did not sign with Chicago Cubs
The Oakland Athletics’ outfielder and former Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes is now speaking in public about his efforts to become a Major League player and especially about his pursuit and decision to play in the A’s franchise.
Practicing hard in this year’s Major League Baseball Spring Training in Arizona’s Cactus League, Cespedes has recently gave an interview to several reporters about his way to come into the Athletics’ roster despite receiving a lucrative offer from Chicago Cubs.
He told the media that he was given a same deal of $36 million by the Cubs, but only hindrance to not to sign with them was as they offered a six year contract while the A’s had already agreed to give him a four year deal with the same amount of money.
Cespedes said via a team translator, “If they make the deal before Oakland, probably, you never know. A lot of time, they had dinner with me three or four times.”
However, now since Cespedes has reached a mutual understanding with the A’s management, things are getting fine for him. He along with his other new teammates, are pretty busy playing in Spring Training.
Though Cespedes still has not got the true level of thrust in his game, but with the time passes by, he is trying hard to get in shape where he will be playing more commanding game for the team and for his own good as well.
According to Cubs’ starting pitcher Paul Maholm, Cespedes’ game will shine as soon as he gets the total comfort of playing in the League.
“I struck him out and blew up his bat [on a grounder], so …” the left-hander, who recently pitched against Cespedes, said. “Obviously, he’s got all the tools in the world. I’m sure he’s going to make adjustments. From everything you hear, he’s a hard worker. He’s just got to get acclimated to being over here.”
In the meanwhile, Cespedes is still learning the ways of Major League. He is new to the League, but possesses enormous hope to perform with big heart from next season on-wards.
