Oakland Athletics beat Philadelphia Phillies, 4-1: MLB Update
The Oakland Athletics’ starter, Trevor Cahill, beat Cole Hamels to take his club into a 4-1 commanding victory over the National League's current leader, Philadelphia Phillies, in the second outing of the three-game interleague series, at the Citizens Bank
Park in Philadelphia, on Saturday night June 25.
Cahill entered the field for his seventeenth start just after nipping his seven-game losing-streak against the defending World Series champions, San Francisco Giants, on June 19, where he allowed just one run over eight innings. The 23-year-old right-hand
pitcher became successful in getting his powerful swinging fastballs, which has given him his five consecutive wins and crushed the strong Phillies batting line-up to take his second-consecutive and eighth overall win in 2011.
Cahill allowed his and the Club’s only run to the Phillies’ catcher, Carlos Ruiz, in the second inning however, after this he completed his seven and 2/3 innings without allowing further runs. He took out six batters and allowed only three walks on 104 pitches.
This boosted the A’s to a dazzling momentum and their closer, Andrew Bailey, too outclassed the Phillies with his one and 1/3 scoreless innings.
Their pitching not only impressed their own manager Bob Melvin, who said about Bailey, "He came in with fire in his eyes," but the Phillies manger too praised the quality of their pitches. "They got good pitching. At the same time, we have to score runs.
I think it might have been a little bit of both."
"It was pretty cool to get that call," Bailey said. "It was good times in Philadelphia when they were winning like it is here now. With all my family being back here, diehard Phillies fans, it is nice to go out there and beat them today. Make them have the
decision who to cheer for."
The Phillies’ reliable starter, Cole Hamels, was excellent as he allowed just two runs over his eight innings, but as the Phillies were struggling with the bat, so these counted costly in these circumstances. Hamels allowed eight hits, two walka and struck-out
five batters, but lost his fourth game of the season.
Closer, Michael Stutes, allowed two runs, one walk and struck out two batters over his one inning spell.
The A’s Adam Rosales launched the one and only homer of the game in the third inning, while Scott Sizemore made an RBI single in the fourth and Mark Ellis and Coco Crisp each made an RBI single ninth to take the lead to 4-1.
