Oakland Athletics defeat Baltimore Orioles 6-4 – MLB Update
Oakland Athletics perfected their three-game sweep against Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, May 29, winning 6-4 at Overstock.com Coliseum, Oakland.
Sunday’s game saw the Athletics’ offence shine again as Josh Willingham hit a three-run homer in a joy-filled fifth inning.
Josh who was also responsible for scoring the first run for Oakland with his single reposed his confidence in the team and said, "The clubhouse is completely different when you're winning. We're playing more consistent baseball, and as a team that's all
you can ask for is to be consistent in all three phases of the game and play up to your capabilities. I feel like we have been lately."
Willingham has been exceptionally good this month with his performance. Being at-bat 79 times, he has scored 10 runs in May, having 18 hits which include four brilliant home-runs and 16 crucial RBIs. His average is .228 which obviously is good news for the
team as a whole, as they depend heavily on his performances.
Josh started Sunday’s game impressively with a run in the very first inning. He singled to left, allowing Daric Barton to score. Zach Britton gave up two hits in the inning, one of which resulted in the first run for the Athletics.
Baltimore came back in the game in the fifth inning when Oakland had a 1-0 lead. Guillermo Moscoso was subjected to massive hits that resulted in the four-run fifth inning against the Athletics. Orioles’ Felix Pie was the first to score by singling to centre
following Nolan Reimold, who scored the second run.
Nick Markakis and Vladimir Guerrero took the lead to 4-1 for Baltimore. However, Oakland’s hitters did not take long to stage a come-back in the seemingly troubled game.
Conor Jackson singled to left for the Athletics to bring Orioles lead down to 4-2 when Britton came out to pitch for his team. Willingham then hit a three-run homer to secure a morale-boosting 5-4 lead for the Athletics. Britton gave up five hits in the
inning and four runs.
Craig Breslow then pitched a scoreless inning for the Athletics. Barton once again pounded the Orioles’ defence and hit a sacrifice fly to give a safe 6-4 lead to Oakland.
Grant Balfour and Brian Fuentes threw amazing shut-out eighth and ninth innings to turn Oakland’s lead into a 6-4 victory and sweeping the three-game series in style.
