Oakland Athletics defeat New York Mets 7-3 – MLB Update
The Oakland Athletics defeated the New York Mets 7-3 at Citi Field in New York on Tuesday, June 21.
The Athletics are now on a streak, winning the previous six games played.
The scoring opened in the first innings with both Jemile Weeks and Cliff Pennington scoring. Weeks and Pennington added one-run each in the third innings as well, with the score standing at 4-0 at the end of the third innings and the game almost seemingly
out of Mets’ reach.
The Mets showed some resilience in the fourth innings when Angel Pagan added one run to score. Oakland had other plans for the night. Hideki Matsui and Conor Jackson added one-run each in the fifth inning before Jemile came out again in the sixth to score
his third individual run for the night and taking the A’s score to seven. From there on, it was just a matter of time before the Athletics tasted victory.
Jason Bay then unleashed one in the stands, a 420 feet hit in the sixth innings before Pagan added another in the eighth, but this late onslaught from the Mets wasn’t enough to match the Athletics’ feat.
Oakland’s starter, Josh Outman, improved his personal record to three wins for the season. In the six innings he pitched in, he conceded just four hits giving two runs in the process. His four strike-outs took his season tally to 16. Outman managed 57 strikes-outs
of the total 98 pitches at an impressive ERA of 2.86.
Outman was well complimented by his relief pitchers. Grant Balfour stood out, saving his second game of the season and pitching at an astounding ERA of 2.48. This accurate pitching by the A’s cannot be overlooked as an ingredient for the win.
The Mets’ pitchers, on the contrary, had an ordinary outing. Dillon Gee, the Mets’ starter, faced his first loss of the season after recording seven wins. It is worth mentioning here that this was only Gee’s second loss of his career. He pitched in four
innings, conceding four runs on three hits and only one strike-out. He managed 45 strikes of the 87 pitches, at an ERA of 3.21 which was relatively higher given his career standards.
D. J. Carrasco came in as relief pitcher for the Mets but couldn’t stop the flow of runs. His ERA of 5.94 summarises the outing well. He conceded three runs and four hits in the two innings he pitched in.
The A’s are now on their longest winning streak of the year and equipment manager Steve Vucinich attributed this streak to superstition. The A’s glued to their gold alternate jerseys, even on the road.
With their record now at 34-40 for the season, the Athletics are now on a roll. The Mets need to stop this tide and level the series in the next game on Wednesday, June 22. With the Mets now at 35-38, it will be interesting to see how they react to this
mauling in the first game of the series.
