Oakland Athletics defeat Seattle Marines 5-2 – MLB Update
The Oakland Athletics put in a good performance as they defeated Seattle Mariners 5-2 at Safeco Field, Seattle on Sunday, April 24.
The Oakland Athletics’ Coco Crisp sparked on Sunday having three hits and scoring three runs, as the offence which had not been in full song in last few games was amazingly good this time.
"I know he's going to be sore. He's going to feel that wall," Oakland Athletics’ manager Bob Geren said. "He stayed in the game and kept playing, just both sides of the ball, on the bases, he did everything. When he has a day like that, it can really carry
the team."
Seattle, on more than one occasion could get back into the game but missed the opportunities. It was Luis Rodriguez who struck the tying run but the defence could not maintain it. Mariners’ manager was conspicuously disappointed by the performance. "We've
got to break through this," Seattle manger Eric Wedge said. "We had opportunities on and off throughout the course of the ballgame. These guys are going to have to figure out a way to fight through whatever they are going through mentally, fundamentally for
that matter, and finish off innings."
The game began with Hideki Matsui opening the account for Oakland in the very first inning. Matsui singled to right where Coco Crisp scored, as Doug Fister gave up two hits in the inning. Seattle did not let Oakland maintain the lead. When they came, Milton
Bradley charged Brett Anderson who had come out to pitch for Seattle. Bradley ground out to second where Ichiro Suzuki scored to level the score.
Fister gave up another hit in the second inning, but no run was scored. The defence of both teams, was exceptionally good leaving the offence incapacitated. Oakland doubled their lead in the seventh inning when Josh Willingham rounded out to first where
Crisp and Conor Jackson scored. Seattle tried to stage a come-back in the game in the very next inning, as Ryan Langerhans grounded out to first where Michael Saunders scored, bringing the lead down to 3-2.
Jackson and Willingham did it all for Oakland in the 9th inning. It was an inning that saw three massive hits given up by Jamey Wright. The duo provided a solid offence to the team. The 5-2 lead was enough for Oakland provided the defence worked
out well. Brian Fuentes pitched a shut-out inning, paving the way for a 5-2 victory for Oakland.
