Oakland Athletics defeated by Tampa Bay Rays 3-8 – MLB Recap
Oakland Athletics defeated by the Tampa Bay Rays 3-8 in the first game of their three-match regular series encounter on Friday, April 19 at Tropicana Field.
Athletics’ entire roster could not play well against the Rays’ offensive pitchers. They did not look confident during the entire game and lost with huge margin.
Only few Athletics’ players tried little but their effort was not enough to save the game for their team. Starter Brett Anderson started the game for the Athletics and allowed four runs on four hits.
He also allowed four earned runs on his one inning’s spell. He was hammered with huge hits as his ERA rose to 5.95.
“It's pretty sore, a little swollen. It's kind of early to tell the severity of it, It's kind of depressing. I just landed and felt not great. ... I don't know if my heel hit too hard and kind of jarred something there or what. Just landed a little wrong,"
said Anderson, who was hurt on his next-to-next pitch.
Later relief pitcher Evan Scriber replaced Anderson and pitched three innings’ spell. He too was hammered with heavy hits on his 4.26 ERA. He also allowed four runs and four hits along with a homer.
“You always want to keep grinding and try to get the closer in the game, which we did, He threw some pitches. We had him on the ropes, but he got out of it. It's kind of who we are and try to be is not go down quietly," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said.
On the other hand, the Tampa Bay Rays showed great resilience and played as one unit. Right fielder Ben Zobrist scored two runs on four at bats. He also ran for two RBIs and maintained his slugging percentage at .393.
Third baseman Evan Longoria also contributed with his one run and two RBIs. Along with batters, the Tampa Bay Rays pitchers also played a wonderful role in their team’s tremendous win.
Starting pitcher Alex Cobb pitched 7.1 innings and received three runs on ten hits. He allowed three earned runs and struck out three on his 2.53 ERA.
