Oakland Athletics edge New York Yankees 4-3 – MLB Recap
The Oakland Athletics edge past New York Yankees 4-3 in the first game of their four-match regular series encounter on Thursday, July 19 at O.co Coliseum in Oakland.
Oakland played as one unit and powered past the Yankees comprehensively. They never allowed the Yankees to dominate and instead kept them under pressure throughout the game as the Athletics won with a one run margin.
Since the second half the season has started, the A’s performance looked quite consistent. They have played six games so far and lost only one which is also a very good sign for the A’s, who are looking for a potential spot in the upcoming post-season.
In Thursday’s game, the A’s again performed brilliantly and earned a decent victory against the Yankees.
The entire A’s team played confidently and never gave any loop-holes to their opponents and gave them tough time in all areas of play.
Especially starter A.J. Griffin looked persistent on the mound as he received two runs on his seven hits. He pitched six innings and gave two earned runs while his ERA remained consistent at 2.70.
Griffin did not allow the Yankees’ batters to hit him freely as he was also able to retire their four potential hitters.
Griffin said, "First inning, I had some nerves a little bit, but I just had to overcome those, I felt like I was trying to do too much maybe. Around the third inning I just told myself don't try to throw hard, just spot it up and stay within yourself, do what you do that makes you good."
Later Yankees' manager Joe Girardi commented on Oakland’s tremendous performance and said, "They're playing better, They've won 10 out of their last 12, they had a big win yesterday, they're swinging the bats better, their starting pitching has been good, their bullpen has been good. This is a team over .500, so they're playing pretty good."
On the other hand, the Yankees' pitcher Freddy Garcia played poorly and certainly lost the game for his team.
He pitched 5.2 innings and gave up four runs, four earned on nine hits. He did not play his natural aggressive game as his ERA rose to 5.37 which eventually proved disastrous in the Yankees defeat.
