Oakland Athletics grace away Edwin Encarnacion from the Toronto Blue Jays off waivers
The free agents in Major League Baseball are abuzz with calls and demands from clubs scattered across both the National League and the American League. The off-season is as vibrant as any other one from the past and it is not surprising
to see the best teams in the league fight over agents who are available on the market. The heat is on by every measure and as teams look to capitalize on their weakness with new signings, there is the thought that injection of new blood in the system can generate
better results from the next campaign in 2011. The time to restructure and rebuild is high. It just has to be seen how clubs accommodate the change in the coming days.
The top free agents in the game are none other than Cliff Lee, Derek Jeter, Jayson Werth and Carl Crawford. With the top teams fighting tooth and nail to secure their services, there are other players on the horizon who can offer
the middle tier clubs an opportunity to pose a danger of an overtake in the next season when the games start in April. One of the teams to make elegant strides towards signing top players is none other than the Oakland Athletics. The side has done well so
far and it is looking to improve the squad before the spring training.
The A’s have made another move for a veteran player in the free agents list and it is none other than Edwin Encarnacion, who was put on waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays, recently. The veteran hitter will offer a great contest to
Kevin Kouzmanoff, who was Oakland’s leading home run smasher during the 2010 campaign. Edwin comes in with a batting average of .244 and he will create a dimension in the batting line up when the A’s hit the plate in April. The new member of the team batted
in 51 runs and slammed 21 homers during 2010.
Assistant to the General Manager, David Forst made a few comments on Friday and said, “He's coming off his best offensive year in the big leagues and this gives us a chance to increase our options as far as the 25-man roster is
concerned.”
Forst went on to comment on Kevin and Edwin by saying, "We certainly don't have to decide who our third baseman is for a few months. This creates another option for us, and we'll make those decisions when we need to."
