Oakland Athletics hand Toronto Blue Jays second straight loss 5-4 –MLB Update
Oakland Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays for the second straight time 5-4 at O.co Coliseum in Oakland, California on Friday, August 3 in second game of their four match series.
The A’s made a strong start to the contest to take a crucial 2-0 lead in the third inning. Rajai Davis hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the fourth to put the Blue Jays on the board. Jeff Mathis homered to left centre in the bottom of the ninth to level score
4-4 and his glimpses of brilliance gave Toronto renewed hope.
However, the A’s were determined to make it 2-0 and Coco Crisp delivered the go ahead run in the fifteenth to stun John Farrell and his men.
"It's fun to get everybody involved like that," Crisp said of getting his third pie of the year. "The fans were getting into and it seems more like a family atmosphere. It's like giving them something extra."
"I was just trying to get it up in the air and deep enough," Crisp said. "I'm glad Weeksie has enough speed to beat that arm out there."
Blue Jays will be disappointed with their effort in a game that presented a number of scoring opportunities to them. Athletics, on the other hand, used their home conditions superbly to establish their supremacy over their opponents.
With their win the A’s improved their record to 58-48 to further narrow down the gap between themselves and the American League West Division leaders, Texas Rangers. It will be interesting to see if they can continue their marvelous run over the next couple
of months to make it to the playoffs.
"Not only did it save the game, it gave us momentum going into the dugout," Melvin said, praising shortstop Eric Sogard’s defensive play. “We were all juiced up when he made that play."
Farrell and company will be looking to learn from their mistakes to turn the tables on Oakland in Game 3 and Game 4. They are still not out of the playoffs race and it will be great to see if the Blue Jays can start winning on regular basis to turn things
around.
