Oakland Athletics look to sign Magglio Ordonez for 2012 season – MLB News
The Oakland Athletics’ management is lately thinking positive before entering into the new Major League Baseball season. They are showing their intent to sign some veteran league players in order to give some stability to their dire 40-man roster. The team were unable to perform well in 2011 as they lost many games down the stretch late in the regular season.
Recently some reports have speculated in the media that the Athletics are pursuing former Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox ace slugger Magglio Ordonez. He played quite well in 2011 representing the Tigers achieving a .255 hitting average along with five homers, 32 RBIs and .303 OBP. He also managed to play in some 90 plus games.
Ordonez, who was injured last season, is now recovering from surgery after re-fracturing his right ankle in the American League Championship Series. He possess some tremendous skills which make him a good all round player.
Regarding Ordonez’s late injury recovery, his agent Scott Boras said earlier during a press conference, “His ankle is fine. I expect some (teams) to look fairly well at him. They could see him being a force off the bench. He’s going to start the actual baseball stuff here real quick, so his ankle is fine. When he starts his skill work, he’ll be in a position to get some interest, I expect some to look fairly well at him, and they could see him being a force off the bench."
Radhi Muhammad, who is the fitness trainer of Magglio in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, commented on his potential return last week. He said, “He's hitting the hard. The bat sounds good. He won’t exactly be ready by the beginning of spring. But he’ll be ready for any team.”
Some experts believe that Ordonez’s past 14 years record is pretty solid on the field but his late recovery from the injury might hurt his game in the future season. While, on the other hand his skills, past stats and extraordinary hitting abilities will definitely help the Athletics in 2012 if signed on time. According to trainers and fitness coaches, Magglio will be completely recovered in a few weeks and can play in the upcoming training sessions as well.
