Oakland Athletics lose to Detroit Tigers 1-3 – MLB Recap
The Oakland Athletics lost to Detroit Tigers 1-3 in the final game of their four-match regular series encounter on Sunday, May 13, at O.co Coliseum, Oakland in the 2012 Major League Baseball season.
Not only the Tigers won this particular game, but they also saved the series from losing 3-1 instead tied the final series count 2-2.
Starter Justin Verlander went with two hits one run and struck-out total eight Athletics’ batters and remained confident on the mound in seven innings proving his Most Valuable Player caliber.
With slight thumb callus, the Tigers ace pitcher could not finish the game and relief pitchers Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde came to rescue the team and pitched the eighth and ninth innings.
"I really don't know what happened. It's kind of been happening for me all season long and I've been trying to deal with it and figure it out. Obviously I want to go back, but the risk-reward, seventh inning ... there's no point in going out there and risking it and maybe something serious happens. If I could, I would. Maybe if it's the World Series I'd have gone back out there, who cares.” said Verlander of his thumb tightness.
Third base Miguel Cabrera provided the batting offence and hit three times and able to made two RBIs as well.
Later in the game, the Tigers manager Jim Leyland said for his team’s combined play, who also never gave any loop holes to their opponents. He said, "We didn't really break out yet, but we swung it a little better. It was a good win for us.”
Both teams started well and made early runs into fifth inning and performed until bottom of sixth. However, the Tigers pushed behind the A’s in the sixth and kept the pressure until the game was over in ninth.
In the meanwhile, the Tigers with this win are now sitting at second place behind Cleveland Indians in the American League Central division.
On the other hand, the A’s with 18-17 win loss record are struggling to maintain their winning percentage of .514 and that is why their next series against the Los Angeles Angels is very important.
