Oakland Athletics lost to New York Yankees 1-2 in the first game of their three-match regular series encounter on Friday, September 21 at Yankee Stadium in New York.
Russell Martin’s 10th inning homer landed the Yankees a welcome victory in the series.
"Good teams get each other's back, You can feel that playoff weather coming, I like it. I enjoy it, You want him feeling good about himself, confident, I think he definitely needed this start for himself," Martin said.
Overall he scored one run and smashed one hit along with an RBI and maintained his slugging percentage at .388.
In-fact the Yankees' entire batting line-up did well and proved too good for the Athletics. Right fielder Nick Swisher also played well and scored one run and smashed one hit on his four at-bats while he also maintained his slugging percentage at .452.
On the other hand, the Athletics’ played under pressure and could not recover from the hefty blows by the Yankees’ pitching rotation.
Starter C.C. Sabathia pitched eight innings and received three hits. He did not receive any run on his entire spell, he retired 11 Athletics’ batters and maintained his 3.47 ERA.
"Right off the bat I knew it was gone, He called a great game tonight and kept the guys off-balance and it worked out, I was just trying not to overthrow, I just wanted to make sure I kept my delivery together and make sure I commanded the ball. The velocity will come and go so it's up to me to make pitches," Sabathia said.
Relief pitcher Rafael Soriano pitched one inning and allowed one run and one hit along with a homer. He retired one while he maintained his ERA at 2.10.
Closer David Robertson also played well as he pitched one solid inning and did not receive any run or hit. He also struck-out one while he maintained his ERA at 2.88.
Athletics’ starter Jarrod Parker despite playing well with his eight innings spell as he could not save the game for his team. He received one run and six hits while he retired seven Yankees' batters on his consistent 3.40.
