Oakland Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes learning English fast – MLB News
The Oakland Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is enjoying his stay in US where culture and most importantly the language are quite different than Cuba.
He now has started to learn the tricks of extending his career here in the biggest baseball league in the world.
News are coming that former Cuban international and current Dominican Republic national, Yoenis Cespedes has started to learn the English language in order to be a part of the MLB with every possible aspect.
A’s Jemile Weeks, who is helping out Cespedes with English language as Spanish to English translator, has said recently, “He called me over there, He knows I know a little bit. If I can lend a helping hand, I will. I guess he’s working hard. He’s ready. Don’t count on me,” He’s doing a good job putting the effort in, He knows a few phrases. It’s a process. I feel good that he wants to come to me and ask for help. He knows what he wants to work on and he’ll write it down.”
The 26-year-old Cuban signed a four year deal worth $36 million with A’s this summer after being persuaded by many Major League teams including the Miami Marlins, Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins.
Cespedes, who is currently playing well in fresh 2012 MLB season, is gaining confidence regarding different aspects of the game including language, environment, food and loyalty with a certain franchise.
Cespedes said in Spanish. “Every day, I’m feeling better. I’m a smart guy (learning the language).”
Apart from learning the language, Cespedes is also showing improvement in all areas of play. He is playing with a hitting percentage of .254 along with four home runs, 15 RBIs and .357 OBP.
The A’s are also feeling comfortable with the recent form of Cespedes since Opening Day game against the Seattle Mariners.
Losing the first regular season’s three match series, the A’s bounced back later in the very next series against the Kansas City Royals with 2-1 as well as defeated the Los Angeles Angels 3-1 with help of Yoenis Cespedes.
