The Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy is recovering fast from his head injury. Doctors are quite hopeful that the A’s starter is in good condition but may still be in danger.
On September 5, against the Los Angeles Angels, McCarthy was hit on the right side of his head by a line-drive on Erick Aybar’s swing.
Though he was given first aid in the locker room, team doctors later performed two major surgeries to stop bleeding inside his brain which now threatened his whole recovery process.
Regarding a CT scan report, McCarthy has suffered an epidural hemmorhage, a brain contusion and a skull fracture which will take some time to recover.
“First and foremost, we need to look at his life and make sure he stays alive, I think the next phase we would go through is to look at his simple gross-motor mechanics and skill set to get him through his normal active life. ... Then later on down the road, we'll worry about his fine motor skills. We're just going day-to-day and making sure he's making progress,” A's trainer Nick Paparesta said about McCarthy in detail and explained it to the media.
Paparesta added, “We will stay cautiously optimistic at this stage, The fact that he was able to get up, sit up, feed himself, those are obviously great signs. Hopefully, he can have full function."
McCarthy is a talented player and possesses six years of experience in Major League Baseball. His presence in the A’s roster is needed but since he is injured with some serious head injuries, the overall performance of the A’s will be affected in the coming days.
Before getting injury, McCarthy was playing with great focus at 3.24 ERA, 8-6 win-loss, 73 strike-outs and 1.25 WHIP.
Already the A’s have tough competition in the American League West with the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels which automatically enhances McCarthy’s importance in the A’s line-up.
Rangers with 82-56 win-loss record and .594 winning percentage are sitting at top while the A’s with 77-60 win-loss and .562 winning percentage coming along nicely with second position in the AL West.
Oakland will be hoping McCarthy gets better from his injuries and is able to get back to the action soon.
