Oakland Athletics thrash Los Angeles Angels 4-1 – MLB Update
Oakland Athletics continued their incredible winning streak as they floored the Los Angeles Angels 4-1 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California on Wednesday, September 12 in third game of their four match series.
With their win, the A’s also completed an emphatic series victory against their American League West Division rivals. Oakland looked down and out before the All Star Break and credit should be given to them for showing great determination to rise out of
the ashes.
Manager Bob Melvin should be congratulated for the way he has managed some difficult situations this season. The skipper will be expecting his men to continue their good work in the finale to sweep the Angels and improve their chances of reaching the playoffs.
Oakland’s pitching rotation once again played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash. Starting pitcher A.J. Griffin showed just what he is capable of as he struck-out six batters in eight dominant innings. Allowing just six hits, the rookie made
quick work of Angels’ powerful batting line-up.
Closer Ryan Cook also had a decent time on the mound as he successfully held off the Angels in the bottom of the ninth.
''He's on my radar now, put it that way,'' Melvin said. ''We didn't see him at all in the spring. But once the season started, we were watching pretty intently because he was pitching well in the minors. 'We've seen a lot of good games out of him. But against
that lineup, here at this place, that's probably as good as we've seen him. He's got a lot of confidence and he's been fun to watch.''
Yoenis Cespedes provided the A’s with an excellent start as he reached first base safely on a throwing error in the first inning. He later hit a solo home-run to double Athletics’ lead 2-0.
Catcher Derek Norris added a double to deep centre and Coco crisp singled to right in the eighth to help Oakland take a decisive 4-0 lead. Albert Pujols scored the only Angels’ run with a solo home-run to left in the ninth.
Athletics will definitely feel happy after they managed to put up a tremendous performance as they beat the Angels in an exciting match-up.
