Oakland Athletics traded Collin Cowgill to New York Mets – MLB Update
The Oakland Athletics have traded Collin Cowgill to the New York Mets. Cowgill last played in Oakland’s big team and Minor League affiliates triple-A Sacramento and showed some spirited performances.
With this trade, the Athletics received Minor League infielder Jefry Marte from the Mets. This late trade happened just after R.A Dickey signed a potential extension with Toronto Blue Jays.
Cowgill’s trade also opened a slight room for the Athletics to sign some more pitchers. Though outfielder Cowgill played certainly well in the last outing with the Athletics, but general manager Billy Beane wanted some more fire power on the mound as he
let go his young prospect.
Cowgill played a split season in Athletics in which he batted at .269 hitting average along with one home run, two doubles, and nine runs batted in over 38 games for Oakland’s big team in the 2012 Major League Baseball season.
On the other hand, he also batted well with the Minor League affiliates triple-A Sacramento. He remained consistent on his .254 hitting average along with four homers, 37 RBIs and 33 runs in 61 games.
Now with a new team in New York, the former Athletics’ star Cowgill will join Mike Baxter, Lucas Duda, Juan Lagares, Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Cesar Puello and Jordany Valdespin in the Mets’ 40-man roster.
Athletics manager Bob Melvin is a big fan of Cowgill and his offensive game as he recently said for him in Arizona. “The one thing I take away from this is that he’ll have a better opportunity there,” Melvin said.
Along with Cowgill’s trade to Mets, the Athletics have also recently signed Japanese star Hiroyuki Nakajima.
Melvin also said of Nakajima, “I’m extremely excited to sign him. He’s a guy we’ve targeted all along and I’ve heard great things about him.”
GM Beane also said, "There are some things when you're here in Oakland that just feel right. This one felt right, The longer we went on, the more information we got we said let's take a chance on the unknown as opposed to going down the road of the known."
Experts believe that next few weeks will be more critical when Athletics bring more new faces in order to compete well with leading Major League teams.
