Oakland Athletics weak outing against Texas Rangers displays problems in the camp – MLB Update
The Oakland Athletics went up against the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Friday, September 9 as they looked for a good winning streak, the club failed to make a dent on the Texans, who lashed out a 13-4 victory over the visitors in dominating
fashion.
One of the disappointing features of the game happened to be the three errors that were conceded by the Oakland fielders. With an offensive Goliath like the Rangers in the strike zone, one would do well to maintain a good composure around the diamond.
"When you make as many errors as we do, you put yourself in a tough situation, especially against teams that can swing the bat," manager Bob Melvin said. "You give them extra outs, usually you get it handed to you. It's frustrating."
However the A’s were not in the best of form to deal with the pressure. Brandon McCarthy did his best as he pitched six innings, allowing just four runs off five hits.
When the hurler was replaced with the relievers on the mound, the game took a huge leap away from the Oakland side. There was a chance to come back in to the fixture when the game sat at 4-2 in favour of the Rangers. That immediately changed after the next
three innings as the score moved up to 13-4 in favour of the Texans.
Michael Young, designated hitter for the Rangers explained the turning point well. Elvis Andrus got Ian Kinsler to score for the Rangers with a double in the bottom fifth. A throwing error by A’s third baseman, Scott Sizemore, then brought on the fourth
run for the Texans.
"We found a way [to score]," Young said. "Elvis' double was big. McCarthy was throwing the ball well, and we were able to string some at-bats together after that."
The Oakland bullpen has been well under fire and even though there is a positive outlook in the future, there is a big difference in power between the Rangers and the Athletics.
"They're better than us," said McCarthy. "There's no sidestepping it.
The important question to ask now is whether the Oakland Athletics can solve their problems soon before the 2012 regular season or are they willing to continue into the next season with struggling form.
