Oakland Athletics whitewash Los Angeles Angels, 14-0, to sweep the series: MLB Update
The Oakland Athletics had a dominating all round performance to snatch a 14-0 impressive win over the league rivals Los Angeles Angels at the Overstock Coliseum, California, on Tuesday night, May 17, to clinch a series with 2-0.
Mark Ellis hit a runs batted in (RBI) single off the Angels' starter, Tyler Chatwood, to lead off the first inning. Then Kevin Kouzmanoff and Coco Crisp, both added an RBI single each in the same inning to take their club to a 3-0 early lead.
In third inning, Ellis again came into action, this time with an RBI double to begin the four-run inning. Kouzmanoff added another RBI single to elevate the lead to 6-0. Realising the game could go out of their hands, the Angels' Manager, Mike Scioscia,
replaced Chatwood, who yielded seven-runs and two walks over two and 1/3 innings, with Trevor Bell.
The move though did not work as Crisp touched another RBI double to take his club to a 7-0 lead.
Bell made strong pitches, flied out Josh Willingham before allowing Hideki Matsui a drive in double in the fourth inning. By the end of this inning, every Oakland batter had stolen base except Daric Barton. Bell then allowed Kurt Suzuki to score an RBI single
to earn his club's eight run deficit. In the next inning, however, Bell did not allow any run and was relieved by Kevin Jepsen in sixth.
Jepsen hit the Athletics’ Willingham with a pitch, flied out Matsui before allowing David DeJesus his first run in sixth inning. Ellis again scored an RBI single in his third at-bat of the game. Then Ryan Sweeney, Daric Barton and Willingham followed Ellis,
scoring RBI single each to cement their 22nd win of the season.
Jepsen had a nightmare day as he yielded five runs on four hits and walked one over one innings. Rich Thompson gave away one run on one hit and walked two over one and 2/3 innings while closer Hisanori Takahashi did not yielded any run in last inning.
The Athletics’ pitchers, on the other hand, shined with the ball as starter Gio Gonzalez tossed shutout seven innings and made seven strikeouts to earn his fifth win of the season. Reliever Craig Breslow remained scoreless over one inning and rookie closer
Trystan Magnuson pitched a prefect last inning.
