Oakland Raiders break Kansas City Chiefs’ record for most number of penalties – NFL News
The Oakland Raiders could not reach the playoffs but still managed to gain a lot of attention by breaking the record for most numbers of penalties and yards forfeited in a season.
The Raiders all along have had a bad time this season. They have been faced with injuries to key players and in the last game against the San Diego Chargers could not manage a breakthrough to the playoffs. That game ended all hopes
that the Raiders had of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2002. However, the game still brought fame for them but in a negative way. Breaking the record for most penalties is not exactly what they were looking for.
This problem with the Raiders has persisted ever since this season began. No one could come up with an explanation for this inconsistency. Coach Hue Jackson did not have the answer when asked though he had wanted to get rid of
the problem since the beginning.
"I don't have the answer, obviously," Jackson said. "I talk to the team about it all the time. I don't just talk. I yell, I scream, I threaten. I've done everything. I get a bunch of letters of people telling me other things I
should try, too. And please don't send any new ones because those things don't work."
And others too did not have an answer.
“I wish we knew what it was. It's not a bunch of false starts. It's not just holdings. It's kind of all over the place.” Quarterback Carson Palmer said.
The Raiders needed just four more penalties and 11 yards before last Sunday’s game to break the record held by the Kansas City Chiefs since 1998. A victory did not come but the record was made. It was the 15-yard foul awarded to
Matt Giordano in the first quarter of the game that brought them the record after they surged past the Chiefs total. Of the total penalties sustained, the most have come on their defensive line. And the players coming up with the most number of penalties have
been Cornerback Stanford Routt followed by Offensive linemen Khalif Barnes and Jared Veldheer.
Different strategies were tried earlier on by the coach and team management to curb the fault but none succeeded. One such attempt was by fining players for committing penalties. However, that failed to bring out any results and
the Raiders finally made their way with the record.
