Oakland Raiders clinch thrilling 26-23 win against Jacksonville Jaguars in overtime – NFL Recap
Oakland Raiders came out in a closely contested game with a 26-23 overtime victory against Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7 game on Sunday, October 21, 2012, at O.co Coliseum, Oakland, California.
Raiders came back from 14 points behind in the second half to level the score and take the game to overtime and eventually win it.
Kicker Sebastian Janikowski scored the decisive 40-yard field goal as Jaguars wide receiver Cecil Shorts III fumbled the ball in the first possession of overtime.
It was not a very dominating victory by the Raiders (2-4) as they struggled in the first half and gave away three turnovers in the game.
Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer finished the game with 26 of 46 for 298 yards. He scored two touchdowns including a 1-yard run in the final quarter that came after defensive end Lamarr Houston forced a fumble that was recovered by defensive back Joselio
Hanson.
Palmer was happy to see fortunes turning in their favour after a heartbreaking 20-23 loss against Atlanta Falcons in Week 6. Palmer said:
"An ugly win is better than a pretty loss. I know that. I'm just proud of the way we fought because it wasn't pretty. We did not play up to our standard and play the way we're coached. But we hung in there and defence played great giving us the ball back.
It's just good to get out of here with a win."
However, Jaguars were not so fortunate. They lost their two key players during the game due to injuries.
Running back Maurice Jones-Drew injured his left foot during the opening play of the game while quarterback Blaine Gabbert got a shoulder injury.
Jaguars offence failed to give good performance due to absence of these players during the second half. During the postgame press conference, Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey said:
"We're finding ways to not win these games instead of finding ways to win them. At some point it's got to turn and the only people that can make that happen, starting with me, is the people that are in that room.”
Janikowski opened the scoring chart for Raiders with a field goal, but Jaguars got the lead a few minutes later with a touchdown pass from Gabbert to finish the first quarter 7-3.
Jaguars then struck early in the second quarter with a five-yard run from running back Rashad Jennings which was followed by a field goal from Josh Scobee as first half ended 17-6.
In the second half, Jaguars went 20-6 with another field goal. However, Raiders made a comeback with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Palmer to make the score 13-20.
After a field goal by Jaguars early in the final quarter, it was all Raiders as they scored nine points in less than four minutes to level the game.
