Oakland Raiders cornerback Ron Bartell suffers shoulder injury -- NFL news
Oakland Raiders' unfortunate run of injuries continues as their cornerback Ron Bartell is diagnosed to have a shoulder injury after getting injured in Week 1 game against San Diego chargers.
The announcement about Bartell’s injury was made by Raiders head coach Dennis Allen on Wednesday, September 12, 2012. Allen said of the player:
“He’s got a fracture of the scapula. I don’t know exactly how long that means that he’ll be out, but he’ll obviously miss some time.”
Bartell broke his left shoulder blade during the Monday night game. It is reported that he will miss at least four to six weeks in order to fully recover from this injury.
The cornerback is currently in consultation with a specialist to discuss his timetable and procedure of rehabilitating from this injury. Bartell’s shoulder will not require a surgery, meaning he will take relatively less time to recover.
In absence of Bartell, cornerback Pat Lee, who played the rest of the game after Bartell’s injury, would likely play as the starting cornerback.
Raiders are facing a critical situation at the cornerback position with lack of depth. Apart from Lee, Raiders only have two newly signed players, Phillip Adams and Joselio Hanson.
While Hanson seems to be facing difficulty playing in Raiders offence, Adams does not have the experience to give good performance consistently. Talking about the situation at the cornerback position, Allen said:
“Hey, listen, we've got NFL football players on our roster and we expect them to go out and play like NFL players. He went out and did a pretty good job last night against a pretty good group of receivers and a pretty good passing game.”
Raiders were hoping to give their cornerback spot a boost after signing Bartell on a one-year contract this offseason, but after this injury, they might consider the option of adding a free agent on the roster.
Bartell has played eight seasons in the league. He was drafted by St. Louis Rams in the second round (50th overall pick) of the 2005 draft.
