Oakland Raiders interviewed Winston Moss on Jan. 14 for head coach slot – NFL News Update
The Oakland Raiders search for a new head coach continues as reports now circulate that Green Bay Packers’ assistant coach, Winston Moss interviewed for the job more than a week back.
The general manager of the Raiders, Reggie McKenzie interviewed Moss on Jan. 14. Moss has now become one of the favourite candidates for the head coach slot along with many other people who have so far been interviewed.
Considering that McKenzie was the former director of football operations for Green Bay Packers and his close ties with the Packers coaches, it has seemed a very strong possibility that the Raiders would end up hiring one of the Packers coach. Now as it turns
out, chances of hiring Moss seem likely high.
McKenzie had earlier stated his desire to build the team on Packers’ model, so that could mean that one of the Packers coaches would better suit the head coaching vacancy.
The other three Green Bay Packers’ coaches being eyed by McKenzie included Joe Philbin, Dom Capers and Tom Clements. However, Philbin has now been hired as the Miami Dolphins coach leaving the ground open to these three men.
The Raiders have been without a head coach ever since Hue Jackson was fired on the first day McKenzie took over as the new general manager.
A bitter Jackson had left saying that McKenzie wanted to bring his own man in. And that is what McKenzie wants to do now. McKenzie wants to bring in the best man and that could possibly be the reason why his list of potential candidates seems so long.
However, there are two other strong contenders.
One is the offensive coordinator of Philadelphia Eagles, Marty Mornhinweg, recently interviewed by McKenzie.
The interview, according to some news reports, went fine.
Mornhinweg and McKenzie have worked together at Green Bay Packers, so they both are acquainted, enjoying a close relationship.
The other strong contender appears to be Todd Bowles who recently led the Miami Dolphins, 2-1, in the last three games he coached.
Bowles has recently been sidelined by the Dolphins for their head coaching vacancy, so he is now open to a job with the Raiders. Being a defensive specialist makes him better suited for the Raiders job as they continue to cope with a failing defence.
Moss is a former National Football League (NFL) player who played for the Raiders during his eleven year long career in NFL.
He has coached the Seattle Seahawks in 1998 and the New Orleans Saints in 2000. He joined Packers in 2006 and was appointed the assistant head coach in 2007.
